Agents
The specialist agents that do the work in Morbium, from the default Build agent to the board, firmware, 3D, and sourcing experts, and how to pick one.
An agent is a specialist with its own instructions, its own set of allowed tools, and its own permissions. Morbium ships with a roster of agents, and routes your request to the right one. You can also pick an agent yourself, or add your own.
Primary agents and subagents
Agents come in two kinds:
- Primary agents are the ones you select in the composer. They drive a session.
- Subagents are launched by another agent to do a focused piece of work in the background, through the
tasktool. You do not select them directly, but the primary agent delegates to them.
Some agents can act as both.
The built-in roster
General
- Build is the default agent. It can use every tool, make changes, run commands, and delegate to the specialists. Most of your work starts here.
- Plan is a read-only mode for thinking through an approach. It cannot edit your files (except planning notes), so you can explore and get a plan before any changes are made. Switch to it from the agent selector when you want to look before you leap.
Hardware specialists
- Board designer designs and fixes circuit boards. It is tightly scoped: it can only touch board files, and it works in a loop of writing the board, checking it for errors, and fixing them. See Designing boards.
- Fabricator designs 3D models such as enclosures, brackets, and mounts. It reads your board's real dimensions so the part fits, and it can only touch 3D model files. See 3D models and enclosures.
- Firmware writes firmware for microcontrollers such as ESP32, STM32, RP2040, and AVR. It reads your board's pinout so the code matches the hardware. See Firmware.
- Sourcing prices a parts list and checks stock for your region. It runs only when you explicitly ask to source parts. See Bill of materials and sourcing.
Research helpers
- General is a multi-step helper for open-ended research and parallel work.
- Explore is a fast, read-only agent for searching through a project to understand it.
Behind the scenes
Morbium also uses hidden helper agents to keep your session tidy: one names your sessions, one writes summaries, and one compacts the conversation when it gets long so you do not run out of context. You never select these.
Picking an agent
Use the agent selector next to the composer to choose who handles your next message. If you do not pick one, Build handles it and delegates to specialists as needed. For example, asking Build to "design an enclosure for this board" will hand the work to the Fabricator.
Delegation
A primary agent can hand focused work to a subagent with the task tool. This keeps the main conversation clean and lets specialists do their part. Subagents cannot launch further subagents by default, which keeps work bounded.
Customizing agents
You can change any built-in agent's model, prompt, or permissions, and you can add your own agents, in morbium.json or as Markdown files in your project. See Custom agents.
